New York to invest $60M into tourism

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

With all of the wonderful things New York City has to offer tourists, it's easy to forget that the rest of the state has wonderful things to experience. Now, there is a push to explore the New York outside of our metropolitan area.

The famed whale room at the Museum Of Natural History was the setting for the New York State Tourism Summit, an event bringing together industry leaders, tourism experts, and business owners from all over the Empire State. Gov. Andrew Cuomo led the summit.

"Tourism is big business in the state of New York," he said. "It is the fourth largest employer. One out of every 12 jobs comes from tourism."

That tourism is vital to New York's economy. There were more than 218 million visitors to the state in 2013. Those visitors spent $59.2 billion, which was up $2 billion from 2012. 53 million of those tourists visited New York City.

Cuomo believes the state's tourism industry can learn something from the Big Apple.

"The state, frankly, was not as aggressive in this industry as the city was," he said. "So part of today is about developing a synergy between New York City and New York State and those activities."

Therefore, New York State has committed $60 million, the largest tourism investment in decades. Part of that money will support a massive marketing campaign, putting ads on New York City trains, subways, and airports. There will also be a fall winter summer TV campaign spotlighting the range of activities across the state. Places like the Adirondacks, the Finger Lakes, Niagara Falls, and Long Island beaches will be featured. Some ads will also feature New York celebrities Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep, Vanessa Williams, and Billy Joel. The message of the campaign is that New York State has something for everyone.

New York's tourism industry has supported over 800 thousand jobs and generated $7.8 billion in tax revenues. That's enough to pay the salary of every firefighter and police officer in the state.
