Wreckage of Santa Maria discovered?

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - A world renowned explorer believes he has found the wreckage of the Santa Maria, the flagship vessel of Christopher Columbus, which ran aground on Christmas Day 1492.

Barry Clifford and his team made the discovery in 2003 off the coast of Haiti, but it wasn't until 2012, when Clifford came to the realization he had found the ship.

“My son was the first to dive on the wreck. He described it. He said "Dad, I found this really old weird looking canon. I looked at it and I put Santa Maria on our chart. And then our archeological team misdiagnosed the canon. It was nothing anyone had seen before. It was open on both ends and looked like a pipe. Only 7 of these have been found in the Western Hemisphere. In 2012, after doing research on 15th century ordinance, I woke up in the middle of the night, and went oh my God. We realized we had already found it," said Clifford.

While he is cautiously optimistic about the find, Clifford says all signs point to the remains being those of the Santa Maria.

"After putting all the pieces together, after transcribing Columbus’ diary, solving the riddle. Columbus said the ship was a league and a half (4.7 miles) from the fort he built, we went exactly to that location. Between two big sets of waves- currents and that sort of things- and bingo we found exactly what we were looking for," said Clifford.

Some experts have said it would be difficult to verify that the wreckage Clifford has found really is the Santa Maria.

The History Channel is financing Clifford's exploration of the site.

School is back in session for some and will be for most students and staff starting next week.  Good Day New York wanted to salute teachers from across the Tristate as they head back to the classroom. On Thursday, a live studio audience of teachers were part of the Back To School Special: Good Day New York Sorry Summer is Over But We Praise and Honor Teachers (but no math; we like math teachers, though.)

The U.S. Open is underway in Queens and there's no denying that many of the players, both men and women, are in great physical shape and know how to play that up. Women are particularly promoted in the industry as attractive, fashionable and fiercely competitive. Does that help the game and draw more people in?
