Pension reform hits roadblock

Pension reform hits roadblock

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The plan to reform the Illinois pension system has run into a major roadblock.

A judge in Sangamon County has delayed the start of the overhaul plan until the court can determine whether the changes are legal.

Union officials claim reforms made by state lawmakers are illegal because changes can only be made through contract negotiations. The changes were scheduled to take effect June 1. Without them, the state's pension obligations will continue to grow.

The case is expected to eventually go to the illinois supreme court.
