1,000 vehicles to get free recreation passports

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (AP) -- The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix will hand out 1,000 state recreation passports free of charge this weekend.

The giveaway begins at noon Saturday near park shelter No. 9 on Belle Isle. Passports will be given to owners of the first 1,000 Michigan-registered vehicles that don't already have them. The distribution will continue until 3 p.m. or until the maximum is reached.

Recreation passports are required for vehicles entering Michigan's 102 state parks. The requirement is being phased in at Belle Isle.

Passports usually cost $11 for in-state residents.

Grand Prix Chairman Bud Denker says not everyone can afford a passport, so the giveaway is an effort to give back to the community.
