Ordinance proposed in Sterling Heights would ban discrimination based on sexual orientation

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (WJBK) - Sterling Heights could become the first city in Macomb County to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or identity.

The ordinance would apply to housing, public accommodations and employment.

Councilman Michael Taylor is floating the ordinance.

"This is all about treating people fairly; it's all about making sure people know Sterling Heights is a welcoming, open, inclusive community," says Taylor.

The 7-member Council will vote on the ordinance and have agreed to discuss the proposal June 3.

Ferndale and 30 other Michigan cities have adopted ordinances like this.
