Dearborn honoring 7 veterans never buried

Posted: Updated:
DEARBORN, Mich. (WJBK) - Seven veterans whose cremated remains have been in Michigan funeral homes for years were honored with a funeral procession this Memorial Day.

The Dearborn Allied War Veterans Council conducted the procession Monday morning before the city's 90th annual Memorial Day parade.

This is the fourth time the group has honored veterans who died with no money for burial as part of the Missing in America Project.

A noon ceremony took place at City Hall. FOX 2's Robin Murdoch was there. Click on the video player above to watch her report.

She talked with Nancy Dlugokenski, who is on the council. Dlugokenski says one of the veterans had been lying in state unclaimed in a funeral home for 41 years.

Master Sgt. William Spanky Gibson out of Oklahoma was the keynote speaker at the remembrance ceremony. In 2008 he became the first above-the-knee amputee to return to ground combat. Now he travels sharing his story and inspiring others.

The remains of the seven veterans will be placed in a mausoleum at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly Township, about 40 miles northwest of Detroit.

Those honored were veterans of World War I and World War II. They died between 1973 and 1993.
