Detroit Wick turning recycled bottles into specialty candles

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - These bottles may be empty but the party's just getting started for the people behind Detroit Wick. The company creates a unique and clever recycled glass holder for custom-scented candles.

Doug Schwartz came up with the idea and the earth friendly company was born. He collects the empty bottles from local bars and restaurants that would otherwise just throw them away.

In addition to keeping all that glass out of landfills the company hopes to ignite change. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Green Living Science, a nonprofit that provides recycling and environmental education to Detroit Public School students.

The candles sell for about 35 to 55 dollars. Custom orders are available.

You can find them at Complex in Birmingham, Rust Belt Market in Ferndale and online.
