Parents Beware Of Hidden Pool Danger

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Summer is just around the corner, and swimming pools are about to become a popular spot for many people. But there is a hidden danger that many parents may not even know about, doctors say.

It's called "dry drowning," or "secondary drowning," and it usually happens in children. It can occur four to six hours after leaving the pool.

Dry drowning doesn't occur out of nowhere. It comes from a child going through a near-drowning experience.

Doctors say a small amount of water can get into the lungs and damage them. This can lead to complications or even death.

Experts recommend parents pay close attention to their children after leaving the pool.

If you notice signs of coughing, difficult breathing, vomiting or tiredness, consult a doctor immediately.
