Nightmare Traffic Diverted Into Neighborhood From I-495 Bridge Closure

WILMINGTON, Del. -

"It's a mess. Bumper to bumper to bumper traffic," said Colean Farmer. She's lived near downtown Wilmington off of Northeast Boulevard for 17 years and says never has she seen traffic like she did Tuesday.

"It's not normal traffic. They can't get on 495," she said.

Delaware Department of Transportation officials said Tuesday afternoon the bridge on 495 over the Christina River will be closed indefinitely after the an emergency shutdown Monday. Officials found four columns are out of alignment.

"It is likely a couple of weeks at least until we are able to provide a definitive update," said Shailen Bhatt, Secretary of Transportation for DelDot.

Detour signs are posted everywhere. Drivers are now cutting through neighborhoods and clogging streets.

"There was no way to get home. I work at the hospital and there's no way to get home. We debated walking but we made it out to the store," said Reva Gray. She came out with her children to pick up some necessities.

Neighbors are also concerned about tractor trailers being diverted onto local streets and for good reason. Wilmington Police say a tractor trailer and a car got into an accident at an intersection along Northeast Boulevard and took down a pole. Crews were out repairing it.

"We had to safe up the pole. There were live wires on the ground," said Bryan Ward with Delmarva Power.
