Faulty sprinklers cause significant damage in storage units

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - Several renters of a Willowbrook storage lock up are drying out their units and belongings after a sprinkler malfunctioned and flooded several compartments.

The Lock Up Self Storage on Plainfield Road in Willowbrook has a huge dumpster outside filled with damaged property.

“I was never thinking that something like this would happen in a climate controlled environment that this would happen,” Becca Klinger said.

Klinger found out about the flooding Tuesday night and was shocked this morning when she went to see the damage.

“We lost our kids beds sets, our dining room set, our piano, our TV’s and entertainment centers,” Klinger added.

Klinger is between homes and thought the storage location would be dry, safe and secure. She showed FOX 32 some of the damage she said was caused by the flood water.

Klinger and other tenants said a single sprinkler over one unit malfunctioned and sprayed hundreds of gallons of water over a two hour period on Monday night. At least a dozen other renters suffered damage.

The company could not be reached for comment.

Some tenants said they lost electronics and a valuable baseball card collection. Their contracts specifically state that renters are responsible for their own property , even water damage from sprinklers.

Klinger said she was aware of the policy and purchased the minimum insurance that covers $2,000, but she estimates her loss closer to $15,000.

Steve Bernas from the Better Business Bureau said renters of storage lockers should read the fine print in all contracts and if this happens, you should call your homeowner’s insurance company to see if there is a “needs peril” provision in your policy.
