Spanish ads to run on MetroCards

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority issued a Spanish-language advertising campaign on MetroCards.

250,000 MetroCards were purchased by the immigration law firm Youman, Madeo & Fasano LLP to promote their law firm and a television show the firm produces called Hablando De Inmigracion, which means talking about immigration.

This will be the first time a MetroCard advertisement will be in a language other than English since the MTA started using advertisements on the back of MetroCards in 1995. The MTA began selling space on the card's front face in 2012. MetroCard advertisements range between 25 and 45 cents per card with a minimum print run of 250,000 cards.

"We're very pleased by the continuing high level of interest that advertisers are showing toward the MetroCard as a medium for promotions," MTA spokesman Paul Fleuranges said in a news release. "This confirms that our decision to relaunch the MetroCard advertising program was the right move. Advertisers can continue to leverage the MetroCard as a vehicle to communicate to our diverse customer base."

    When 826 NYC, a nonprofit organization that fosters creative writing skills, asked children ages 9-12 to dream up the ultimate lemonade stand, the responses were huge. The winning project of  The Great Lemonation Imagination Collaboration was turned into a real lemonade stand complete with free lemonade in Manhattan's Flatiron District. The organization's members were also required to help run the stand that went up at Broadway and 23rd Street on Wednesday.

The mostly immigrant workers are now called the Association of Artists United for a Smile and are fighting to protect their jobs, in light of a recent crackdown. Jorge Duran says he stands around for hours, sweating inside a costume, and says it is annoying and unfair if he poses for a good picture and gets nothing.
