Motorcycle riders band together to grant cancer patient's dying wish

(WJBK) - A woman with cancer says her last wish was to ride a motorcycle once again. Thursday night, dozens of motorcycle riders banded together in metro Detroit to help make her wish come true.

"I just took a chance to get one thing I wanted because I used to ride," says Brenda Ireland, who has been diagnosed with stage-four breast cancer.

Last Saturday, Laura Lee says she was riding down Jefferson in Southgate when she accidentally made a wrong turn and ended up on Northline Road.

"Something up above was steering me in the right direction," Lee says.

As she was stopped at the railroad tracks beside her Harley waiting for the train to go by, she says a woman parked behind her got out of her car.

"[I] look and this lady is tapping me on the shoulder. And I turn around and she said, 'Can I ask you a favor?'" Lee remembers.

"'Can I go for a bike ride?'" Ireland says she asked.

"And she grabbed her chest and she started to cry and she said she had cancer," Lee says.

Ireland, diagnosed in 2011, had one of her breasts removed. She recently completed chemotherapy but says now her cancer has viciously spread to her liver and pancreas.

Her only wish: one last ride.

But, that day, Lee had never ridden with a passenger so she had to say no.

"She went to leave and I said, 'Wait a minute! Let me get your phone number because I'm going to get you a ride somehow, someway,'" says Lee.

As word spread of Ireland's wish, Thursday bike after bike rolled in to support Ireland's wish of having one last ride.

Pink ribbons were tied to 52 bikes.

Ireland's ride led the pack.

"I just can't believe so many people came." says Ireland. "I hope this isn't my last ride but if it is, it's wonderful," she says.
