Delaware Governor Tours Closed I-495 Bridge Site

NEW CASTLE, Del. -

"It's a whole lot of traffic. It's bumper to bumper," said one driver. Another said, "I don't even know where I am right now. It's crazy."

It's day four of massive traffic backups in and around Wilmington. Drivers are spending a lot of time going nowhere fast.

"It's not moving at all. I feel like I've been in traffic 45 to 50 minutes," said Melanie Cornetta.

State officials spent Thursday exploring more options to fix the bridge along 495 that runs over the Christina River. This after they discovered Monday that some of its columns are out of alignment causing the bridge to tilt. It's been closed since then.

"While we knew there would be a significant impact on the traveling public and on business it was a pretty clear decision because we have to put safety of the traveling public first," said Governor Jack Markell. He toured the bridge alongside Delaware Department of Transportation crews who say tilt sensors installed have shown no additional movement.

"That gives us confidence it's stable given the current condition. But we still need to investigate other issues because if something goes on under there that could change," said Shailen Bhatt, Secretary of Transportation for DelDot. The news isn't providing much relief to drivers, including tractor trailer drivers sharing the road with smaller vehicles. They're all battling traffic indefinitely.

"They day is over for me. I'm supposed to be off and I'm still here and there's no other way around," said Fenel Pie who drives a tractor trailer.

The U.S. Secretary of Transportation said $2 million dollars in emergency funding has been approved to start the process of fixing the problem but that could take weeks to months.
