BIRMINGHAM, Mich. (WJBK) - Surviving World War II veterans and their fallen comrades were honored by U.S. and other world leaders on the 70th D-Day anniversary.

Thousands of allied troops died on the first day of the invasion. Many more lost their lives in the three-month long battle that followed.

The operation was a turning point in the fight against Adolf Hitler's Nazi rule.

More than nine thousand American soldiers are laid to rest in Normandy. Many of them were killed on D-Day.
