Police arrest 2 after multiple car break-ins in Dearborn

Posted: Updated:
DEARBORN, Mich. (WJBK) - Police in Dearborn recovered a long list of items stolen from vehicles in the city. But the police chief says some of the victims made it too easy for the perpetrators to do their dirty work.

If anyone knows how to read people, police officers sure do. And Dearborn's top cop has seen a lot.

His professional opinion - "I think they play the odds."

But eventually you're going to lose and we pray you do not lose your life.

"We want citizens to take the very basic measures to ensure that they are not victims," Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad says.

"It's common sense, unfortunately, not too many people have it anymore," neighbor Eric Garza says.

In the wee hours of Wednesday morning, Melanie noticed something rather strange.

"Everyone on our street was robbed," she says.

That really ticked her off.

But what happened next took it up a notch - she saw the robber.

"Two, not one," she says, stealing from every single solitary came they came across.

"My neighbors call me the neighborhood vigilante," she says.

And very rightfully so.

She put together a posse to break up this party and they pounced. They surrounded the suspects, 20-year-old Joshua Trevil and a minor.

"Then all of a sudden, woop woop, here comes the police," Melanie says.

They arrested these roughnecks, and both of these bad boys are really bad news.

"They're both habituals. One's an adult; one's a juvenile, and as long as they can make profit by victimizing our citizens they're going to keep doing it," says Haddad.

He adds some people in the city leave their cars unlocked.

"Open an unlocked car, rummage through the car and go to the next one," Haddad says the suspects would do.

Police have received 50 citizen complaints in the past four days.

That's crazy, but here's where it gets scary.

"Weapons in the wrong hands can only turn disastrous," Haddad says.

These thugs found a gun, a 9mm ruger. They also found a Tazer, handcuffs and a knife, and two black billy-clubs. There were other keepsakes and treasures but nothing that could kill like this could.

"In the case we had a two-time, three-time convicted felon, a habitual, who has two weapons that he got by going into unlocked cars. That just makes our community a whole lot more unsafe," says Haddad. "It was very disappointing to arrest these two people and find out that we were such an easy mark here in the city of Dearborn."
