Man hammers shotgun shell, loses part of finger

Posted: Updated:

TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) - A southern New Jersey man who hit a shotgun shell with a hammer in a bid to get his mother's attention instead lost part of a finger when the shell exploded.

Toms River police say the 43-year-old man and his 65-year-old mother were arguing Sunday night about his excessive drinking. He then left the home and entered a makeshift cloth shed behind the house.

Once inside the shed, authorities say the man put the shell in a hollow metal pipe. He then hit it with a hammer, hoping it would make a loud noise and get his mother's attention.

But the shell exploded, blowing off part of his left index finger.

Authorities declined to identify the man or his mother.

No charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing.
