Students robbed on Lakefront under eerie underpasses

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Two armed robberies in 24 hours have more University of Chicago police patrolling, and students on high alert.

"I did see the security alert about that. There's two bridge underpasses to get over to the beach there, one is safer than the other and I think the one they were in is less secure,” said Andy Rapoport in an interview with FOX 32's Tisha Lewis.

Rapoport is a sophomore at the University of Chicago. He described the eerie underpasses.

"It's like this long dark kind of narrow tunnel whereas the other one is much better lit, there are murals on either side," said Rapoport.

Police said a student was walking Friday night on the sidewalk off campus at 57th Street and Everett Avenue and was approached by three suspects - one holding a gun. The suspects took off with the victim's headphones.

A second ambush happened Saturday afternoon. Two students walking eastbound through the tunnel at 55th Street and Lake Shore Drive were approached by three unknown suspects - again one armed. The suspects demanded the victims hand over all of their valuables.

"I'm an old fashioned Hyde Parker who still carries a whistle with me and we used to have a whistle stop program, that if you get in trouble you blow in the whistle and somebody comes," said "Roberta," a long time Hyde Park resident.

Roberta is one of many long time Hyde Park residents who say an alert was posted in buildings and online urging residents to be aware of their surroundings.

"What's posted is there are three suspects walking together, one had a handgun, no one was hurt, that's the good news," said Roberta.

"There are always people around here, this is a very crowded area for bikers and walkers and joggers," said Ann Weller, a bicycle rider.
