Police on the scene of an armed robbery in Chamblee that ended with an officer shooting and killing the suspect
CHAMBLEE, Ga. -
Police in Chamblee shot and killed an armed robbery suspect early Tuesday morning, according to authorities.
Police tell FOX 5 that officers were called to an AutoZone on Buford Highway just before midnight. A robber had entered the business around closing time, and took five people hostage, officers say.
The hostages were tied up, but one was able to escape and called police. Officers surrounded the building. Some time later, the suspect came outside. That's when he got into a struggle with an officer. During that struggle, the officer shot and killed the suspect, according to a Chamblee police spokesman.
Traffic on Buford Highway was blocked in both directions from Chamblee Tucker Road to Beverly Hills Drive for several hours. Buford Highway has now re-opened to traffic.
Surveillance video from a nearby business show police approaching the building with guns drawn, just before they shot and killed the robber. You can also see the hostages make their way out safely.
Police say they are investigating whether the gunman fired any shots.
