North Carolina Artist Turning Trash Into Treasures

Posted: Updated:

CHARLOTTE, NC- Turning trash into treasure is what artist, Katlyn Wyllie, is all about.

Katlyn describes her recycled artwork as organized, chaotic, stained glass.

"When I start to make a piece, I have an idea of what I want to make but I have no idea. It's just, it's up here and whatever comes through my hands is what I make," said Katlyn.

"I really am inspired by taking materials that people just throw away and making it awesome," she added.

And don't worry folks, she does wash her hands after digging through the trash cans. And though it is waste she's dealing with, apparently there are rules.

"Rule number one, leave everything the same if not better than when you found it. Clean everything up, close it and walk away," Katlyn said.

The same rule applies when she steals glass from her mom.

"Sometimes I come out and when I need a color I'll take one from my mom's bottle tree and I try to replace it before she knows," she explains.

Another interesting point to make about Katlyn, is that her art studio is in the middle of the woods.

"My dad gave me this tarp and gave me this table and said, 'please work out here.' And I mean, I enjoy it," she said of her workspace.

Even under these circumstances, Katlyn does not hold a grudge against her father.

"It helps me really, kind of connect with what I'm doing. It all is very Earthy so I might as well be outside," explained Katlyn.
