ZELLWOOD, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
Lonnie Hatfield loves golf! At nearly 80 years old, he still played several times a week. Then, he started having episodes where he could hardly breathe after taking just a few steps.
Doctors told the Zellwood man that he had a leaky heart valve and that congestive heart failure was literally killing him. But at his age and with a very weak heart muscle, doctors also told Hatfield he was not a candidate for the traditional fix which involves open heart surgery.
But he discovered that Florida Hospital had a clinical trial of a tiny device, called a mitraclip, that might fix his leaky valve with a minmally invasive procedure.
FOX 35'S Tom Johnson shows you how the device changed Hatfield's life.
