Miami nixes downtown boat slip for soccer stadium

Posted: Updated:

MIAMI (AP) - The city of Miami has taken a deep-water boat slip and part of Museum Park off the table as a possible stadium location for David Beckham's Major League Soccer team.

Mayor Tomas Regalado and City Manager Daniel Alfonso nixed the downtown site in a meeting Tuesday morning with the retired soccer star's real-estate adviser, John Alschuler. The city officials said it wasn't a good location for a 20,000 seat stadium.

The design called for utilizing an empty plot of land behind the AmericanAirlines Arena where the Miami Heat play and the unused boat slip nearby. Beckham's group developed the new design after their initial plan to build at PortMiami was scratched.

Alschuler told The Miami Herald that Beckham's group plans to take some time to consider its remaining options.
