Heroic officer saves driver after gas pump crash

Posted: Updated:
An off-duty New York state police officer helped save a man's life in a fiery gas pump crash.

It started when the man crashed his car into a gas station in White Plains.

Officer John Vescio was filling up his tank at the time, barely avoiding the pump falling on him before it burst into flames.

He then ran back toward the fire to get the 69-year-old driver out of the car.

"I got the door open but I could see the actual compartment was compressed. His legs tucked under the seat and his seatbelt was on. He was pretty much helpless," Vescio said.

The officer then helped keep people away because he had ammunition in his trunk.

Investigators believe the driver was in diabetic shock.

Both men suffered only minor injuries.
