WHITING, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An 18-year-old man drowned in Lake Michigan while swimming with friends in northwest Indiana on Monday night.

Jose Alcazar and two other friends were swimming near a newly constructed fishing pier about 250 feet from the shore early Monday evening in Whiting when he began to struggle to stay afloat, then disappeared underwater, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcement.

A U.S. Coast Guard spokesman said the search began about 8 p.m. and the other two people were rescued from the water, the Post-Tribune is reporting.

A diver found Alcazar’s body at 10:30 p.m. about 47 feet from the pier, according to the statement.

Alcazar, of the 4700 block of Towle Avenue in Hammond, was pronounced dead at 11:36 p.m., according to the Lake County (Ind.) Coroner’s office.
