Starbucks Announces Employees Eligible for Free College Education

Posted: Updated:

(FOX 11) Starbucks, the beverage of choice for many college students; now, wants to make college students out of their many employees. Beginning this fall Starbucks employees nationwide will be eligible for a free online college.

It's all because of a new partnership between Starbucks and Arizona State University. This new initiative could lead to more than 100,000 of their employees graduating debt free!

"Over 100,000 young people work for Starbucks and the majority of our partners have not had access to college education," Starbucks CEO Howard Shultz said during an announcement Monday.

They're calling it The Starbucks College Achievement Plan. Starbucks employees who work at least 20 hours a week will receive full tuition reimbursement if they enroll in ASU's online program as juniors or seniors.

Freshman or Sophomores will be able to apply for scholarships worth $6,500. They'll have 40 different online programs to choose from.

ASU President Dr. Michael Crow says the plan is about creating success.

"We're here for your success. We're here so that you can not be held back," Crow said.

Starbucks says the program is designed to unleash lifetime opportunity for its employees and to reinvigorate the American dream.

It's available at all Starbucks company stores. And, employees of other Starbucks business's Seattle's Best and Teavana are also eligible.
