CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Crews have been reshaping Northerly Island to create and urban oasis that Mayor Emanuel says will attract tourists and wildlife.

Mayor Emanuel joined Chicago Park District CEO Mike Kelly, EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy and Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Army for Civil Works Jo-Ellen Darcy on a tour Northerly Island Tuesday morning. At the tour, Mayor Emanuel delivered remarks about investments being made in the lakefront.

The area, once Chicago's lakefront airport, is now filled with a bridge, lagoon, hills, and architecturally designed pathways.

Crews expect to get a lot of work done on the project over the summer. When it opens in the fall, it will add 50 acres of park to the lakefront. Crews have already started planting some of the trees and plants that will take root there.

Once it is finished, children will be able to camp our and learn about resources from the planetarium, field museum and aquarium. People will also to be able to get closer to Lake Michigan than ever before.
