Freight train derails in Melrose Park rail yard

MELROSE PARK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Part of Mannheim Road is closed Tuesday afternoon as crews investigate a Union Pacific freight train derailment in west suburban Melrose Park.

The derailment happened about 2 p.m. in the Union Pacific rail yard near Mannheim Road and Lake Street as train cars were being moved within the yard, railroad spokesman Mark Davis said.

Three train cars carrying vehicles came off the rails, but are still upright, Davis said.

One of the cars is leaning against a support beam for the Mannheim Road overpass, prompting officials to close a portion of the roadway until Illinois Department of Transportation inspectors can look it over.

No one was hurt in the incident, Davis said.

Metra’s Bellwood station on the Union Pacific/West line is nearby, but the derailment is not affecting Metra trains, the commuter agency said.
