American Idol hopefuls crowd U of M for auditions

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

American Idol is holding its auditions for season 14 at Mariucci Arena on the University of Minnesota campus and thousands of hopefuls lined the streets early Wednesday morning for their shot at one of those coveted gold tickets.

American Idol is holding auditions in 15 different cities this year, and it's been seven years since judges were in Minnesota scouting the talent.

Ryan Seacrest greeted the crowd and shook hands with attendees around 8:30 a.m. -- some of them were so stunned it appeared they didn't know what to say to the host.

What do the scouts look for in Minneapolis?

"Originality, this is obviously a music area, a lot of great music from here including one of the most famous pop icons of all time, Prince. I think originality is something the judges set out to find each year, and we don't really know what that means until we start seeing the contestants," Seacrest said.
