Cobb County Police charged a father with felony murder and cruelty to children Thursday after his young son was left all day in the dad’s car and died.
Cobb County jail records show 34-year-old Justin Ross Harris was booked into the Cobb County Detention Center. He is being held without bond.
The tragedy took place Wednesday afternoon at a parking lot off of Akers Mill Square at 2967 Akers Mill Road
Eyewitness Dale Hamilton told FOX 5’s Denise Dillon it was a horrible situation that played out before his eyes in the parking lot.
Hamilton said he saw the frantic father pull the lifeless body of his 22-month-old son from the car and try to perform CPR.
A Cobb County police spokesman said the father left for work at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday and was supposed to drop his son off at a daycare.
But police say Harris went to work, apparently forgetting that his son was in the back of the car.
Investigators believe the boy was alone in the hot car for roughly seven hours.
When police officers arrived at the car, they saw what was happening and also tried to perform CPR.
Sergeant Dana Pierce of the Cobb County Police Department said, “When the officer arrived on the scene, they had started that process themselves but it was quickly decided the child was already deceased and had been for quite some time.”
Sgt. Pierce said the father was distraught and wasn’t cooperating with officers at the scene.
Officers cuffed him and took him away from the scene.
As of Friday, the medical examiner has not released a cause of death because he needs more information from investigators.
