Recent Brother Rice graduate drowns in Lake Huron

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - Authorities say an 18-year-old from West Bloomfield has died after falling off a raft in southern Lake Huron.

A young man with such promise, so full of potential from academics to athletics to service to his community - 18-year-old Ikechukwu Onwuzurike was what his friends and fellow 2014 graduates at Brother Rice call "a more complete man." It's more than their motto. They say he lived it.

"He always was smiling. He was the nicest guy; he was so genuine. He just made you want to be a better person," says friend Jonathan Bach.

"You could have told me the kid was going to be an astronaut, a senator, a lawyer, a doctor, any king of industry all at the same time and I would've believed. He was just, and those aren't hyperboles. He was just that good of a kid," says Brother Rice Director of Advancement, Chris Drouin.

He was what so many aspire to be: a national achievement scholarship winner, a National Honor Society officer, a runner with Brother Rice track and field as well as a mentor who volunteered and worked with children in Detroit.

He would have started at Washington University in St. Louis in the fall but Tuesday afternoon he went missing in Lake Huron while on an outing with friends.

A beautiful day on the water turned tragic when he slipped off a raft and drowned.

Dive teams recovered his body a few hours later.

The Sanilac County Sheriff's Department says Ike was not wearing a life jacket when all of this happened. They're encouraging people to use life jackets when rafting or swimming when high wind conditions are present.

Students are remembering Ike at a vigil at the school and counselors will be on hand as all of them remember someone who meant so much to so many.

"Ike had great potential for this world and he was going to do some amazing things. But something that I really thought about is, Ike had a lot to give - but he had already given so much," says friend Cole Kantgias.
