Son killed, mother cancels vigil fearing killer will return

DETROIT (WJBK) -  "No mother or father should feel the pain that I have been feeling. This is wrong. My son didn't deserve this," says Lavern McKinnie.

Fearing for her life and the lives of others Monday night, McKinnie canceled a vigil she had planned to remember her son, 20-year-old Dakarie McKinnie.

Friday night he was returning from work and heading to his girlfriend's house at Pembroke and Wyoming in Detroit when he was killed.

"No parent should have to bury their child," McKinnie says.

Dakarie graduated from Mumford High School in 2011, where he broke a track record and earned a scholarship to a junior college.

"My son had everything going for himself and these monsters took him from my family," McKinnie says.

Dakarie had just begun a new job at a Chrysler plant and had just learned he'd soon become a father.

Although the moment to remember Dakarie was canceled in fear, friends and strangers are still sending prayers to his family.

"My angel will always be with us. He will always be in our hearts, in our soul. We will always have that," says McKinnie.

Detroit police say they continue to follow leads and have a person of interest in this case, but ask if anyone knows anything at all please come forward.

If you'd like to help the McKinnie family they have a memorial fund set up at Chase Bank under Dakarie's name.
