Defrocked Pastor Frank Schaefer Reinstated After Appeal

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA - Frank Schaefer won his credentials back to preach in the United Methodist Church, but he remains defiant about the issue which got him in hot water in the first place.

Fox 29’s Jeff Cole has the latest developments.

"Thank God it is a great day. There is a much rejoicing in the church,” said Pastor Schaefer.

Frank Schaefer's battle with his own church, The United Methodist, ended Tuesday with Schaefer being returned to the pulpit.

"I am reinstated as a minister,” he said. “I want to dance, but I can't dance.”

He can't dance, but he did appeal the United Methodist's ruling last year stripping him of his credentials to preach.

Schaefer, a pastor in a church in Lebanon, Pa., performed the marriage of his son to another man in 2007.

A complaint was filed, and when Schaefer refused to promise he would not do it again, so he was defrocked.

"I will never be silent again. I will speak for my LGBTQ brothers,” said Schaefer.

A 9 member panel ruled Schaefer could not be punished for something he hadn't done; perform another gay marriage.

His 30 day suspension was upheld, but he's already served that. He was given back pay.

Schaefer says he'll likely move to California where he can perform gay weddings without concern of being punished again.
