Local and state law enforcement agents say they uncovered a ring of thieves who stole baby formula and sold it for profit.
Orange County Sheriff's Office, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Brevard County Sheriff's Office, Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, and the Office of the Statewide Prosecutor in 2012 began a joint investigation after it was discovered that suspects were stealing a large volume of baby formula from grocery stores to include Publix, Wal-Mart, Winn Dixie and Target in the Central Florida area.
Investigators say the suspects were stealing the baby formula and selling the formula to a “fence”. The fence traveled from the east coast to the west coast of Florida to collect the formula and would turn around and sell the stolen product to groceries stores up north.
Officials say this illegal activity netted millions of dollars.
