ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
A pastor who usually helps fight crime on the streets says he's trying to find out who shot his own brother. Pastor Jake Stovall says his brother, Bill Stovall, is fighting for his life after being shot in his home on Herald Drive.
"Everything was torn out the back of his head, the bullet laid next to his skull," says Bill.
Police say it happened at around 2 o'clock on Tuesday morning. According to the police report, he was shot by an unknown person who got away. Pastor Stovall says his brother is being treated in the ICU.
"It really hurts because I see the pain in my mom."
Pastor Stovall says it's a miracle his brother is still alive. He was able to crawl 75 yards, from his house to a neighbor's house, where he was able to get help.
"He was sitting right here," gestured neighbor Mary Roberts, who called 911. "He kept holding his heart, I thought he had been stabbed, until I saw the hole in his head."
Pastor Stovall gained national attention as Chairmen of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. As a street minister, he goes out and tries to convince criminals to lead an honest life, something he did himself. But this time, its wasn't just a crime against anybody, it was his own brother, "When it happened it hit home." And now he plans to find the person responsible for shooting his 56-year-old sibling.
"He's a big guy but a gentle giant. He wouldn't harm a flea," says Bill, who has faith that the gunman will be caught. "I'm thankful that God is using me to go out. I'm not afraid, I go out into the roughest areas and talk to these guys and everything."
