(FOX 11) Outside Elmo Maiden’s Canoga Park home, the Stars-and-Stripes fly proudly. The 94-year-old World War Two veteran says he raises the flag every day as a salute to those who have served and to those who continue to fight our freedoms today.

Maiden was a pilot who flew 35 combat missions, often under heavy fire. He recalls his most harrowing bombing mission took place in December of 1944. The B24 he was flying lost all but one engine over occupied France, formed Maiden to crash-land his plane onto a frozen field in thick fog.

He and his ten crew members survived. He keeps just one medal in his collection of memories, saying accolades such as those belong to those who didn’t make it while serving the country.
