Potato salad Kickstarter: good or bad for crowd-funding?

Potato salad cost me $3.19 from a deli across the street. Had I made it myself I might've spent $10 in ingredients. Or I could've asked the Internet for help, as Zach Danger Brown did and raised $45,000.

He launched a campaign on the crowd-funding site Kickstarter.com seeking $10 to make his own bowl of potato salad.

Kendall Almerico, an attorney and CEO of fundhub.biz, helps companies and individuals raise money on various crowd-funding sites. He applauded Zach and his bowl of mayonnaise and chopped potatoes.

But not everyone we spoke to found the cause as inspiring. We met none of Zach's 5,500 (and counting backers) at the corner of Madison Avenue and East 38th Street Thursday evening. This crowd failed to hear about Zach's now-famous lunch but confidently forecasted their own pledges if they had: zero.

Critics say the internet rallying around this starchy treat hurts the crowd-funding chances of more urgent -- many might even say "deserving" -- causes. But Almerico disagreed.

"You talk to people on the street, 80 percent of the people don't know what it is," he said. "A story like this raises awareness of crowd-funding."

You say potato, Zach says salad. And Almerico says much-needed exposure for a two-year-old method of financing that he sees as the future.

Instead of calling the whole thing off or pocketing his $40K, Zach said he plans to host some sort of event for his donors and donate the rest of his potato salad money to charity.
