Mother, daughter carjacked at fast food drive-thru

DETROIT (WJBK) - Carjackers targeted on a mother and her young daughter while they waited in the drive-thru line at a fast food restaurant.

It's a story no 8-year-old should ever have to tell: looking down the barrel of a gun.

"They're meanie pants," little Drew Willis says. "I felt scared, and then I kept crying 'til I got home."

Her mother, Brande Tate, says just after midnight Friday morning she stopped at the Wendy's drive-thru on Grand River Avenue with her daughter.

"After I placed my order, I pulled up to the window and I reached down to get my wallet to pay," Tate says. She says the drive-thru worker must've seen a man approaching because she says the employee violently shook the windows open and closed to alert her.

"That's when I heard the guy say, 'Get out the car,'" Tate says. Not understanding what was happening, Tate hesitated. "So he repeated himself and I looked up and he showed me the gun and he pointed it at my daughter."

Unbuckling her seatbelt, Tate told her daughter to calmly get out.

Getting in, the man took off in her silver 2008 Lexus. Tate called police and waited inside the restaurant with her crying daughter.

Detroit police say upon arrival, the green van the suspect was riding in was found abandoned at a gas station across the street. Tate's phone was traced to a vacant home on Trinity Street. Her car has still not been found, along with everything else inside.

Tate says her purse, laptop, credit cards, laptop and $500 is gone. Drew says her book bag with all of her items from camp are now gone, too.

Police are still searching for the Lexus with the license plate DCM 0465 and four black men in their early 20s. Tate says the man was dark-complected, had a slender build and was between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall.
