Gunshots end fundraiser for Del. burn victim

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - The organizer of a fundraiser for a Wilmington burn victim is demanding government action after gunfire abruptly ended the event in a city park.

Police say no one was hurt by the gunshots Sunday evening at Haynes Park. But organizer Cecilia Williams tells The News-Journal it makes no sense that people can't even raise money for a good cause without risking their lives.

The event was meant to raise money to help pay the medical bills of Williams' sister Francine Wallace. She and another woman were hurt in a June 16 house fire that claimed the life of 48-year-old Lamotte Scales.

Wilmington Mayor Dennis Williams tells WDEL radio he plans to introduce gun legislation in hope of getting more criminals off the streets.
