ATLANTA, Ga. -

An Atlanta 1st grader is collecting teddy bears on her birthday, but they're not for her.

Taylor Shepard wants to give them away to help other children who lost their own toys in local house fires.

"For her 7th birthday, she wanted to do something a little different," said Susan Shepard, Taylor's mother.

Taylor spent her birthday at the American Red Cross on Monroe Drive. She decided to skip the presents that guests would normally bring on her birthday, asking those guests and the rest of Atlanta to donate new teddy bears for the Red Cross.

"I am a proud mom, I think that we really want to make sure that the focus remains on the task at hand," said Shepard.

The bears will go to children who have lost their own toys in local house fires.

"To have one of our volunteers in the middle of the night place one of these bears in their arms just gives them something to love," said CEO of American Red Cross of Georgia, Terri Badour Duckett.

Taylor's mother says Taylor has a giving soul. "She's really empathetic, she's always been really aware of her surroundings."

The 7 year old wants to reach a goal of 700 bears.

To donate, you can go to American Red Cross at 1955 Monroe Drive. The bears must be new with tags preferred, but not required. They must be smaller than 15 inches, and they're not accepting any Beanie Bears.

The last day to donate is July 25 by 5:00 p.m.
