Fire Breaks Out At Animo South LA High School

Fire Rips Through LA Charter High School

Dozens of LA County firefighters battle a 2 alarm fire that rips through the Animo Charter High School in Inglewood.

No students were at the school as it was closed for summer break when the fire hit.

LA County Fire Inspector Scott Miller said two firefighters were hospitalized after fighting the fire. Miller says they both are expected to be fine.  

The fire contained to one building at the high school campus and the Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire and extent of the damage. 

Inspector Miller says the majority of the roof is destroyed as well as a facade and exterior wall.  

Investigators says a construction crew was working at the school and they are investigating if that caused the fire.

LOS ANGELES – Green Dot Public Schools California CEO Dr. Cristina de Jesus released the following statement today regarding a fire at the building that houses its Ánimo South Los Angeles Charter High School campus:

"We are aware of the fire at Ánimo South Los Angeles Charter High School, which was reported shortly before 2:30 p.m. today. However, we have very few details at the moment. What we do know is important: The campus was closed to all stakeholders. No students, teachers, counselors or parents were on the campus.

"At this time, we do not know the cause of the fire nor the extent of the damage.

"We are working very closely with Los Angeles Unified School District officials on contingency plans to continue serving our students. School begins on August 12 and we will have a plan in place to serve all of our students.

"Superintendent John Deasy is to be commended for his quick response on our need for alternative space for our students, teachers and staff.

"We also want thank the first responders and fire fighters who so quickly went into action to minimize the damage to the building.

"We have already begun to notify parents of the incident and will keep them updated on our contingency plans to continue serving our students.

"Ánimo South Los Angles is one of our founding schools, with a tight-knit family of students, teachers, parents and staff. This fire is a setback and the school community's response embodies 'Ánimo' – a Spanish word calling one to action to overcome obstacles and invoking a spirit of persistence and resilience in the face of adversity. Our school community has already begun to come together to overcome this setback and will continue on its path of academic success."

Ánimo South Los Angeles Charter High School was founded in 2004. The school, which has been named as one of America's Best High Schools by US News & World Report and Newsweek several years running, serves more than 600 students in grades 9-12.
