Students home safe from Israel

Two local girls have made it home safely after spending weeks in a war zone.

Meredith Seigel and Elana Spiegel have been studying near Tel Aviv for the past six weeks, as the fighting between Israel and Hamas intensified.

The girls say there were some terrifying moments which included running to bomb shelters and watching Hamas rockets get shot out of the sky.

“I’ve actually had to run to the bomb shelter nine times,” said Spiegel.

Despite the fighting, both girls insist if they could have stayed longer they would have.

Coming home early was always an option, but the girls’ parents say they trusted school instructors to make the right call.

Seigel and Spiegel say the fighting wasn’t enough to keep them from learning lessons they had anticipated, and so many more they hadn’t.

There were about 40 students from all over the United States that were part of the study group.

The families tell FOX 5 there were about 11 who chose to come home early.

Spiegel’s dad says it’s incredible to think they went to learn about the history of Israel and ended up becoming part of the history.
