SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man was killed Friday night when he crashed his SUV in northwest suburban Schaumburg.

Richard Velez, 44, of West Dundee, was driving a 1999 GMC Yukon Denali west on Interstate 290 near Route 72 about 8:30 p.m. when his SUV struck the concrete median wall several times, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office and Illinois State Police.

The SUV then collided with the back of a parked construction vehicle pulling an arrow board, police said. The arrow board took most of the impact.

Velez was the only occupant of the SUV, authorities said. The driver of the construction vehicle was not injured.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:51 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Several lanes of the expressway were temporarily closed as a result of the crash, police said. No citations have been issued.
