CHESTER COUNTY, Pa. - Police say a man injected a kitten with heroin and dragged the kitten by a rope from a car. A vet used the overdose drug Narcan, which is meant for humans to revive the kitten.

"He had a rope that was around his neck that was pretty tight. The main trauma that we found was to his mouth he had a couple of teeth missing and he was bleeding from his mouth," said Dr. Gary Puglia, a doctor at Hope Emergency Patient Care in Malvern.

He's talking about a 3-month-old kitten rushed in early Sunday morning.

"It was sleepy almost to the point of comatose and minimally responsive to anything going on around him," said Dr. Puglia.

Investigators say the precious kitty had been tortured and given heroin by 24-year-old year old James Myers of West Chester.

"It's rare but we do see certain neglect or cruelty cases. This is certainly an extreme circumstance of possible drug exposure," said the doctor.

After giving the kitten, now named Hope, fluids and medication doctors thought he would have to be euthanized, but then decided to administer Narcan. Narcan is the medication used to revive heroin addicts who overdose.

"It has the same immediate affect so it's just kind of a coincidence that it is also a reversal for this type of drug exposure that we definitely don't see commonly if at all," said Dr. Puglia.

The kitten was found on Dunwoody Road in West Whiteland by an officer on routine patrol. He noticed the suspect in a car with the door open and the kitten underneath the car.

"We don't know if it was being dragged behind the car or was being slammed down, but it had substantial amount of trauma to it," said Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan.

He says Myers is a heroin addict and that police found 22 bags of heroin on him, hundreds of bags of used heroin in the car and 46 needles. He's been arrested and charged. Meanwhile, Hope is recovering surprisingly well.

"This is a strange case," said D.A. Hogan.

The kitten will not be available for adoption until he has made a full recovery.

On Wednesday, the Chester County SPCA announced they are seeking donations as the kitten's medical bills continue to add up.
