Marijuana Tourism Skyrockets In Denver

Marijuana Tourism Skyrockets In Denver

Posted: Updated:

DENVER,CO-Summer often means a trip down the shore or to the Poconos. But for some, they're going to new heights on their vacation, like custom limo tours, cooking and art classes, all involving marijuana.

FOX 29’s Chris O'Connell traveled to Denver where the tourists are flocking for vacation.

Steve and Wanda Worsley thought what better way to spend their romantic 7th anniversary vacation than visiting picturesque Denver, Colorado.

However, these love birds from Seattle didn't come for the Rocky Mountains. They came to go shopping and for the weed.

"Figured we'd stop by and enjoy some of the legal recreation," said Wanda.

Welcome to Colorado's budding business of pot tourism.

"Here you just kind of walk in, show them your ID, and buy it,” said Steve,

These days out of state tourists like the Worsley's are flocking to Denver’s 350 recreational pot shops.

"Have you seen any people from Philadelphia? I’ve seen tons of people from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey,” Keenan Mitchell with euflora.

FOX 29’s Chris O’Connell toured the euflora recreational medicine shop.

At euflora you smell the bouquets of the latest high grade pot strains and read about daily pot specials on a tablet.

The Worsley's were shopping for edible marijuana products. The shop has gourmet peanut butter cookies to colorful candies, chocolate bars, even massage oils, which are all infused with cannabis. And the customers may surprise you; young and old, blue collar to professional.

Some companies offer marijuana tours like spa treatments or mountain retreats. Even hotels leave guests brochures on how much and where to consume their pot.

But how is the free for all on pot affecting Denver's inner cities and the people who live in Denver?

FOX 29’s Chris O’Connell took a drive to northeast Denver to find out. He ran into Pastor Leroy Thompson.

"We had prostitution. We had gangs, drug addicts. It was run for your lives,” Pastor Thompson.

Thompson says he's successfully spent years trying to get drug dealers out of his neighborhood.

Now, his grandchildren finally have a safe place to play.

He thinks the recreational legalization of marijuana is wrong is God's eyes and bad for his community.

“Two laws we must obey. God’s law and man's law. God’s law comes before man,” he said.

Even opponents agree legal pot is now the new reality. And in the 7 months since Colorado has made lighting up legal, the state has brought in nearly 26-million dollars in tax revenue, much of it from out of staters, like the Worsley's.

"People seem to be supportive of it. I think because they are realizing it’s not being interactive with everybody's personal lives. It's not being pushed on other people,” said Wanda, “It's something people can enjoy in their homes and it doesn't affect other people."
