Melodie McDanal, Pike Nurseries Associate, has all the professional tips and tricks to keep your garden looking its best through the final months of summer.

Water Wisely

  • Water deeply once a week
    • It is critical to keep your garden deeply watered during these hot dry days. Some plants, such as Azaleas, Camellias and Rhododendrons, are setting bud NOW.  Help them out by watering deeply once a week.
  • Remember your Hanging Baskets
    • They dry out really quickly!
  • Time it right
    • The best time of day to water is early morning or early evening
Mulch, Mulch, Mulch

  • Mulching is extremely important for garden health.
    • Slows evaporation and keeps the soil from drying out completely between watering periods
    • Protects plants from extremes in temperature
    • Helps control weeds
Beds and Containers

  • Fill in garden beds and containers with fresh colorful annuals
  • Deadhead and cutback perennials and annuals.
    • Pinching back spent blossoms help promote more flowers and keep the garden looking neat and fresh!
  • Remember to Fertilize with an organic, water soluble fertilizer
Weed once a week

  • Now is the time when small weed seedlings can become big problems almost overnight. Keep up on your weeding to discourage this!
Lawn Care

  • Raise the cutting height of your lawnmower 1 to 1.5 inches to help your grass survive drought and heat
    • Tall turf shades the soil, slows evaporation and reduces weeds
  • If your grass is dry, do not mow until you have watered or until it rains.
    • Mowing a dry lawn will further stress the turf and expose it to the drying effects of the wind and sun.
