ATLANTA - A woman is in custody after taking a Cobb County Police officer's unit on a joyride down Interstate 75 into Atlanta on Sunday afternoon and causing a major crash that closed the Downtown Connector for hours and sent several people to the hospital including an officer.

Atlanta Police Department spokesperson Kim Jones tells FOX 5 News that Emmerli Wilcoxson was taken into custody after a high-speed chase down Interstate 75 that exceeded 100 miles per hour at times. She ended up crashing into the back of Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Greg Titus on the Downtown Connector near North Avenue, sending him into another vehicle before all three cars ended up hitting the side wall.

The crash crushed a portion of the Cavalier and Titus had to be cut free from the vehicle. He and about five others were transported to the hospital from the scene. Titus sustained severe injuries.

Police say Wilcoxson charged at officers after the marked patrol car she stole came to a rest against the outer wall on the Downtown Connector. Police wrestled her to the ground at gunpoint and finally were able to get her into handcuffs. She was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with head trauma. She is expected to be transported to the Cobb County Adult Detention Center upon her release.

Police say it all started on Windy Hill Road at the Interstate 75 interchange around 4 p.m. Sunday. Police were respond to the area after receiving a report of a suspicious person. The officer at the scene was retrieving something from the trunk of the patrol car when Wilcoxson somehow was able to get into the cruiser.

Police chased Wilcoxson in the patrol car south on Interstate 75 into Atlanta. During the chase, police say Wilcoxson swiped the side of several vehicles on the roadway. The Georgia State Patrol and Atlanta Police Department assisted in the pursuit.

Police have not commented on the exact charges Wilcoxson faces.

Officials closed the Downtown Connector for several hours while they investigated and cleaned up the mess. Traffic was back up well north of the Brookwood Interchange.

Police say a Cobb County Police officer was injured during the incident, but the name and condition of the officer has not yet been released.
