Veteran, 88, celebrates graduation from college

He's a World War 2 and Korean War veteran...and now...a local 88 year old...can say - he's a college graduate.

Allen Fleming, of Dahlonega has accomplished quite a bit in his life. But there was one thing missing...a college degree.

So at 85 years young he went back to school, and at 88...he graduated.

An old typewriter and card catalog sit on display in the University of North Georgia's library in Dahlonega. Now...considered antique. But to Allen Fleming, they're a heck of a lot more familiar than computers these days. "The technology was entirely new and totally foreign to me," he said. Fleming had to catch on quick though if he wanted to earn a college degree.

The veteran had earned college credits over the years through various military institutions, but he never had enough to graduate. When he decided to go back to school, his friends...thought he was crazy. "They said why aren't you sitting on the front porch rocking like you should and could but I found it very challenging and a lot of fun!" he said.

It took him nearly 3 years. His wife would drop him off for class, and pick him up when he was done. He met some new, younger friends a long the way. "They was cute, yeah. One guy said to me, he said I've never been in a class with people as old as you are! and I said you probably don't know people as old as I am!"

Fleming graduated on August 2nd, alongside 200 of his fellow classmates. He earned a degree in English. "I want to blow it up and make it about wall size and charge people to come in and look at it," he joked.

Fleming says his message to others....is that anything is possible if you want it bad enough.
