Good Samaritans Rescue Woman From Car After Crash Into Cobbs Creek

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA - Crews pulled a mangled car from Cobbs Creek after the rescue of a woman who somehow drove off the road and wound up in the water.

"When I got over there I saw that the car was submerged in water, it was upside down and someone was trapped inside," said Marcel Port. He's one of three people in the area of Cobbs Creek Parkway and Greenway Avenue when it happened. They immediately went in to help.

"I ran down there. I didn't know that anyone was inside until I saw her feet dangling inside the water and then I broke one of the windows and tried to open the door. I even tried to flip it over but that wouldn't work," he said.

Finally, they were able to get the woman out and perform CPR until Marcel says she started breathing again. By that time, police arrived and joined the Good Samaritans in the rescue until medics got there and took over.

"It was horrible. It was horrible. The water was up to her neck and the vehicle was submerged. There were trees on top of the vehicle," said Officer Cherron Logan with Philadelphia Police. Police credit the three people who rescued the woman with saving her life. Marcel says he didn't stop for a second to think, he just did it.

The woman was rushed to HUP in critical condition.

Police are still investigating the cause of what happened, but they're looking into whether the woman has a medical condition that may have contributed to the accident.
