Police search for gunman after officer-involved shooting

Police continue to search for a man accused of shooting at an officer Thursday evening.

According to police an 18-year-old woman was hit during the shooting between a theft suspect and a College Park police officer. Police do not believe she had anything to do with the incident.

Fulton County Police tell FOX 5 the theft suspect opened fire at the College Park officer and the officer returned fire. The 18-year-old woman was hit in the leg. Police say they don't know if the suspect or the officer's bullet is the one that hit the woman.

She was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and officers describe the woman's injuries as non-life threatening.

“At this time we do not have a clear indication of whose fire struck the young lady,” said Cpl. Kay Lester with Fulton County Police.

Police believe the gunman used a cut through behind the school and disappeared into the Biscayne Apartments nearby.

College Park Police say everything started when the suspect came to Mars Communication trying to sell a cell phone. Once employees ran the number and realized it was stolen, they called police. College Park Police confirm the cellphone store has cameras and the culprit is likely on surveillance video. FOX 5 spotted a detective going in and out of the store Friday trying to secure those images.

The incident took place at Heritage Elementary School, which is located at 2600 Jolly Road off Old National Highway. The shooting happened in the back parking lot of the school. FOX 5 has also learned there is video of the gunman from Heritage Elementary School.

There were no students present at the time of the shooting.

Police are currently searching for the gunman who is a male suspect believed to be armed with a rifle or shotgun. Police say the man is about 5 feet 7 inches tall with a slim build.
