UPPER DARBY, Pa. -

A man was supposed to be looking after his young nephews, but instead, police say, he took them on a drunken joy ride.

Clarence Hairston,58, faces drunk driving and reckless endangerment charges from an incident that happened on Saturday.

According to police, not only was he tipsy when they pulled him over, but he was still drinking.

The cops call him "Uncle Drunk." Hairston was supposed to be babysitting his 8 and 9 year nephews Saturday when cops spotted his Impala parked in the middle of a busy intersection, blocking traffic at Guilford and Coplay in Upper Darby. Police knew something was wrong, seconds later; the car started awkwardly jerking in fits and starts.

“Look like the guy was hitting the gas, hitting the brake, hitting the gas, hitting the brake,” said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood. “And the 8-year-old was steering the car, and in the backseat the 9-year-old was jumping around, unrestrained.”

Police say Hairston was drunk and had a beer in his hand, a few more on the floor, and the seat was reclined.

Right now, the boys are back with their mother.
