Fatal Arizona gun range accident with child raises local questions

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - A 9-year-old girl accidentally killed a gun range instructor recently. The incident was captured on video and is sparking national debate.

After a few words of instruction the child fired an Uzi, of which the recoil sent the gun over her head, killing the instructor standing next to her. The incident has left civilians and gun advocates around the nation and metro Detroit outraged.

Members of Detroit Sportsmen Congress in metro Detroit support fire arm training for youngsters.

But many sa a 9-year-old allowed to shoot a fully automatic machine gun is unacceptable.

"First off the tragedy is just shocking," says Bob Savo, president of the Sportsmen Congress. "Secondly, how can this even happen. A 9-year-old with a full auto. What were the parents thinking."

Savo, a National Rifle Association certified training counselor and chief range officer at DSC, says that children 10 and under need to be under supervision to shoot at their range.

But in Michigan no law specifies how young is too young to shoot a gun when you are under supervision of a parent or an instructor, like in Arizona.
